In today's English language online lesson we will be dealing with the use of the present perfect with Ever and Never ESL Activities, Games and Worksheets.

Using ever and never with the Present Perfect

When we use ever or never we talk about actions that took place at an unknown time in the past. To indicate that the present perfect is used to talk about life experiences. Yet, in some other cases we use these two words for different functions - you can check our English grammar section for further details - in order to give advice or in statements or fact such as:
 
"I never travel without a map."
"Never leave children alone."

What is the difference between ever and never?

Use Of Ever In English:

"Ever" is an adverb which means at any time or at all time. we mostly use it for questions to ask about life experience with something at any time ⌚ before now. Thus, the time of the action is not important or specified as the focus is on knowing if the person had this or that experience. It can also be used with the expression "The first time" or in negative statements.

Present Perfect With Ever Examples:

 Ever Examples In Questions:

  • Have you ever watched a movie that changed your life?
  • Have you ever seen the Big Ben?
  • What is the worst meal you have ever had?
  • Have you ever fallen asleep in class?
  • Have you ever seen something paranormal?
  • Have you ever ridden a horse in countryside?
  • Have you ever had Russian friends on Facebook?
  • Have you ever had to go to hospital?
  • What is the hardest exam you have ever done? 
  • Have you ever been outside your home country?
  • Have you ever had a car accident?
  • Have you ever owned a pet?
  • Have you ever donated anything to the poor?
  • Have you ever seen a Skyscrapers?

 Ever Examples In Negative Questions:

    • Haven't you ever driven a Ferrari?
    • Haven't you ever left your children alone?

 Ever Examples In Negative Statements:

We can use the negative form plus ever like has not ever or have not ever or you can simply use the word never instead.
    •  He hasn't ever been to Peru.

 Ever Examples With "The first time":

  • It's the first time that I've ever eaten snails.
  • This is the first time I've ever been to England.

Form Of Ever In English:

With the adverb "Ever" we use the present perfect which is formed as follow:
 
Has / Have + Ever + Past participle (Verb + ed).

Use Of Never In English:

"Never" is an adverb too which means at no time. It is the contracted form of ever + not. It is used for a few different situations. We mostly use it in statements or answers to talk about absence or lack of life experience with something at no time in the past ⌚ before now.

Present Perfect With Never Examples:

  • I have never played basketball.
  • Jade has never fallen asleep in class. 

Form Of Never In English:

With the adverb "Never" we use the present perfect which is formed as follow:
